Abstract
In this TEDx talk, I reflect on the transformative role of higher education in shaping both individual lives and society. Drawing on my own journey from growing up in the Australian outback to educational and research environments across five countries, I explore how scholarships, science education, international study, and unfamiliar environments helped expand my view of the world. The talk argues that higher education reaches its greatest potential when it encourages people to move beyond their comfort zones. These experiences can be challenging, but they build confidence, adaptability, empathy, and the ability to work across cultures and disciplines. At a societal level, this matters because the complex challenges we face require people who can understand different perspectives and collaborate across boundaries.
