Abstract
Reverse osmosis (RO) desalination has been rapidly advancing in the water treatment industry due to its high energy efficiency and recent innovations in materials and polymer science. However, such advancements come with challenges, one of which is managing the large volume of produced brine. Thanks to the growing paradigm shift in waste management, waste materials such as RO brine are increasingly being viewed as opportunities for alternative sources of raw materials. This along with the increasing restriction of regulative environmental limits has encouraged the development of technologies to recovery resources such as water and metals from RO brine. This chapter critically discusses the available metal recovery technologies, exploring their underlying principles and foundations while showcasing recent innovative approaches in this field.
